How to Wear a Turtleneck Without Looking Like a Librarian/First Grade Teacher/Ski Instructor

How to style a turtleneck

Winter coats are in full effect. It's officially turtleneck season, and  don't know about you, but I couldn't be happier about it. There's something about slipping on the knit version of a cocoon that gives us the warm and fuzzies. Worried a chin-high sweater will cramp your style? I've got three no-fail ways to incorporate one into your wardrobe without channeling any unwanted fashion vibes. Check 'em out below.
Go Oversized
Not only is a huge, high-necked knit one of the coziest things on the planet, but it's also one of the chicest. Pair it with a mini skirt ( above left), midi skirt, skinnies, or trousers—the oversized fit is so on-trend right now, you can practically wear it with anything and get away with it.
Layer It Up
Super-slim turtlenecks look great layered under everything from summer dresses to overalls and tanks to sweaters. You would love to pair it like the one in the pic did (above center) with her pastel yellow dress along with a sleek black turtleneck—add some tights and your summer frock is 100-percent winter-worthy. One caveat: If you're going to layer, stick to a thin, slim-fitting knit to keep things from getting too bulky.
Opt for Cropped
Great news, guys—cropped styles are still huge for winter, and there are loads of turtleneck versions on the market right now. Layer yours with a long blouse or tee and your favorite distressed denim like (above right) or pair it with a high-waisted skirt or trousers—your legs will look miles long.
